Flooding and Cyclone Gabrielle – All Safe

Flooding and Cyclone Gabrielle – All Safe

Many people have asked how the groups are going after the flooding in the Northern region from 28 January 2023, and as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle from 14 February 2023.

A number of our RDA groups were affected by the flooding events in January and February 2023 but we are happy to report that all humans and horses are safe.

Even for those groups which experienced some flood damage they are able to re-open.

It is always tricky of course, because when RDA groups are closed due to weather-related reasons because they do not have the income from rider fees but costs such as feeding and looking after horses continue. And the work of sorting out insurance claims.

Groups which were affected by flooding included the following – Kaitāia RDA, Whangarei RDA, West Auckland RDA, Tararua RDA, Hastings RDA, Napier RDA, and Gisborne RDA.

Hastings RDA, Napier RDA and Gisborne RDA have been used as drop off points and distribution centres. They have been looking after their community and either have already re-opened and started riding sessions or will be re-starting shortly.

As communities move from response to recovery, it will be become more obvious what is needed for the long term. In the meantime, we recommend donating via the official channels such as the Mayoral Relief Fund.

Here are some of the photos for you to see what has been happening at some of the RDA groups.
