How Therapeutic Horse Riding Helps Children Participate More Fully in Everyday Life.
Riding Helps Thomas sit at the table with his family. Its Not Just pony rides in paddocks
Therapeutic horse riding strengthens Thomas’s core, improves his posture and helps him control his movements. The progress he makes each week allows him to spend more time sitting comfortably with the people who matter most.
Thomas has always shown incredible determination.
Alongside his twin brother Christopher, he arrived in the world far earlier than anyone expected, and from the very beginning both boys faced challenges that would shape their childhood. Yet ask anyone who knows Thomas today and they’ll describe a young boy with a warm smile, a gentle spirit and a determination to keep growing, learning and achieving in his own way.
Thomas attends mainstream school, enjoys spending time with his family and friends and, like many children his age, loves being included in the everyday moments that make childhood special. Every week he eagerly heads to New Zealand Riding for the Disabled (NZRDA), where he knows he will be supported, challenged and celebrated.
Although Thomas and Christopher both attend NZRDA, their programmes are completely individual. Each brother has different strengths, different challenges and different therapeutic goals. For Thomas, every riding session is carefully designed to support the physical, cognitive and emotional skills that help him participate more fully in everyday life and continue building his independence.
Thomas participates in NZRDA’s therapeutic riding programme, where one of his key goals is developing greater strength, balance, coordination and body awareness. For Thomas, riding is about far more than being on a horse. Each session provides opportunities to practise the skills he needs to feel more confident and capable in the world around him.
A key part of Thomas’s programme is the movement of the horse itself. As the horse walks and trots, its rhythmic, repetitive, three-dimensional movement (rotational, lateral and anterior-posterior) closely mirrors the movement of the human pelvis during walking. Every stride encourages Thomas to engage his core muscles, adjust his posture and respond to the movement beneath him. This constant sensory feedback helps develop his balance, coordination, body awareness and postural control in ways that are difficult to replicate in a traditional therapy environment.
Unlike many therapy settings, therapeutic horse riding provides thousands of purposeful movement repetitions during a single session. As Thomas progresses, his coach carefully adapts activities to match his goals, introducing new challenges that encourage him to strengthen his physical skills, improve his confidence and develop greater independence. Each activity supports not only his movement and coordination, but also his concentration, problem-solving and ability to respond to new situations.
For Thomas, these achievements are about more than what happens in the arena. The strength, stability and confidence he develops through riding help him take part in the everyday moments that matter most.
Whether it is sitting comfortably at the dinner table with his family, joining conversations, participating at school, playing with friends or trying new activities, the skills Thomas develops each week at NZRDA help him be more involved in the world around him.
Perhaps just as importantly, every success at NZRDA strengthens Thomas’s belief in himself.
His family see the difference. They see the pride on his face when he achieves something new, the excitement as he shares stories about his riding and the confidence he carries into other parts of his life. Those moments of achievement don’t stay at RDA – they become part of how Thomas sees himself and what he believes he can do.
Sharing this journey alongside his twin brother makes those moments even more special. Although Christopher is working towards very different goals through his own therapeutic programme, the boys celebrate one another’s successes. They encourage each other, laugh together and experience the joy of reaching milestones in their own unique ways. For their parents, watching both sons grow in confidence, independence and self-belief, each following their own path, has been one of the greatest gifts NZRDA has given their family.
Beyond the measurable therapeutic outcomes, NZRDA provides Thomas with something that is impossible to quantify. It gives him the opportunity to challenge himself, the confidence to believe in his abilities and a place where he is recognised not for the challenges he faces, but for everything he is capable of achieving.
Thomas’s greatest accomplishments aren’t measured by how well he rides.
They’re measured in every new skill he develops, every moment he is able to participate more fully, every challenge he embraces and every time he discovers that he is stronger, more capable and more independent than he once believed possible.
Thomas’s achievements reflect the expertise and care behind every NZRDA programme. Each ride is individually planned to strengthen the physical, cognitive and emotional skills that help him participate more fully in everyday life.
Behind every NZRDA programme is a nationally governed framework of quality assurance, coach training and continuous improvement. All NZRDA coaches hold recognised qualifications, undertake ongoing professional development, and deliver programmes in accordance with nationally recognised standards that are independently audited each year. This ensures every rider receives safe, evidence-informed therapeutic horse riding delivered by skilled professionals, well-trained volunteers and carefully selected horses.
