At Riding for the Disabled, the impact of our programmes is often seen in the confidence, connection, and independence our riders build over time. But sometimes, that impact comes full circle.
Corban is one of those stories.
“It is so awesome!” he says of being named Young Volunteer of the Year.
More than 10 years ago, Corban first came to Riding for the Disabled as a rider. Like many children and young people who take part in RDA programmes across Aotearoa, he was supported through tailored sessions designed to build skills, confidence, and connection through the unique partnership between horse and rider.
Today, Corban is giving back as a volunteer at Cambridge RDA – supporting others on their own journeys.
“Riding a horse makes me feel happy, it is fun and not scary at all,” he says.
For the past four years, Corban has been a familiar and valued part of the Cambridge team. From preparing horses and assisting riders, to helping with the day-to-day tasks that keep sessions running smoothly, he brings energy, commitment, and care to everything he does.
Importantly, his journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Along the way, Corban has built confidence in communicating with others, learning to navigate new situations with resilience and determination. His willingness to step up, contribute, and support those around him reflects the very heart of what RDA is all about.
“I became a volunteer because I loved being here… I like helping our riders, especially the younger kids,” he shares.
Across New Zealand, Riding for the Disabled supports thousands of children and young people each year through goal-based programmes delivered by trained coaches, supported by volunteers, and made possible by our remarkable horses. These sessions are designed to build strength, coordination, communication, and confidence – helping riders achieve meaningful outcomes in their everyday lives.
Corban’s story is a powerful reminder that the impact of RDA doesn’t end when a session finishes. It grows – shaping futures, building capability, and creating pathways for young people to thrive and give back to their communities.
Because of the support of people like you, young people like Corban are not only reaching their potential – they’re helping others do the same.
