Beyond the Arena: How Therapeutic Horse Riding Helps Jack Tackle Everyday Adventures.
The therapeutic activities Jack completes at NZRDA are designed to strengthen the skills he relies on every day. By improving his coordination, motor planning and ability to adapt his movements, Jack is developing the functional skills needed to dress himself, carry school equipment, participate in sport and complete everyday tasks more independently. These skills also support his ability to navigate uneven surfaces, climb stairs, negotiate playground equipment, catch and throw a ball, write at school, and safely respond to changes in his environment. Developing these abilities enables Jack to participate more confidently in everyday childhood activities, reducing the physical effort required to complete routine tasks while increasing his independence at home, at school and within his community.
Many of the activities Jack completes involve following multi-step instructions that require him to plan, sequence, organise and execute movements in the correct order. These therapeutic interventions are carefully graded to challenge his motor planning, problem-solving and ability to adapt his movements as task demands change. Every activity is continually adapted in response to Jack’s progress, ensuring the level of challenge remains achievable while promoting ongoing skill development and measurable functional improvements. Throughout each activity, Jack is encouraged to use both arms together, promoting bilateral coordination, improving confidence in using his affected upper limb, and developing more efficient movement patterns. As his coordination, adaptability and confidence improve, he is able to complete increasingly complex activities with less physical effort and with greater independence.

A key component of Jack’s programme is the movement of the horse. The horse’s rhythmic, repetitive, three-dimensional movement (rotational, lateral and anterior-posterior) provides continuous sensory and postural input that closely mirrors the movement of the human pelvis during walking, continually challenging Jack’s balance, posture and core stability. This gentle, rhythmic movement can be graded up or down to match Jack’s individual therapeutic goals and progressively challenge his developing skills. Activities such as riding tighter turns, serpentines and over poles subtly alter the horse’s movement, requiring Jack to continually adapt his balance, muscle tone, coordination and posture in response to the constantly changing movement beneath him. As his strength, postural control and balance improve, the level of physical support provided by his ride team is gradually reduced, encouraging greater independence.

Therapeutic horse riding provides a dynamic environment that cannot be replicated in a traditional clinic. Every stride requires Jack to make continuous postural adjustments, engage his core muscles, coordinate his movements and respond to the horse’s changing motion. Unlike many clinic-based interventions, the horse provides thousands of repetitive, purposeful movement patterns throughout a single session, creating continuous opportunities to strengthen balance, postural control, coordination, motor planning and functional independence in a motivating, real-world environment. This unique combination of therapeutic movement and purposeful activity supports meaningful functional gains while keeping therapy engaging and motivating.
Beyond the physical benefits, RDA provides Jack with opportunities to experience success in a safe and supportive environment. As he masters new challenges, he develops confidence in his own abilities and begins to see himself not through his disability, but through what he can achieve.
These gains are already extending beyond the arena. Today, Jack doesn’t think twice about running off to play with his friends at lunchtime. He’s started climbing the playground equipment, using the slide and joining in games that he once watched from the sidelines. He’s also growing in confidence in his swimming, joining in with his friends and focusing on improving rather than the challenges he once faced. For most children these are ordinary moments. For Jack and his family, they’re extraordinary milestones that represent greater confidence, independence and participation in everyday life.
Jack’s biggest achievements aren’t measured by how well he rides; they’re measured by the smile on his face afterwards. Every week, his mum watches him tackle new challenges with growing confidence, celebrates his successes and enjoy being part of a supportive team. She knows he is safe, encouraged and surrounded by people who see his potential rather than his disability. While Jack is developing the skills to become more independent, his mum has also found something invaluable: a community of families who understand her journey and a place where her son can simply be himself. For one afternoon each week, Jack isn’t defined by his disability or the things he finds difficult. He’s simply a happy nine-year-old doing what every child deserves the chance to do – learning, laughing, making friends and discovering just how much he’s capable of.
Jack’s progress is the result of far more than spending time on a horse. Every activity is carefully planned by qualified NZRDA coaches to develop the coordination, balance and motor planning skills he needs for everyday life. Working alongside trained volunteers and specially selected horses, each session is tailored to his goals and continually adapted as his confidence and independence grow.
Behind every NZRDA programme is a nationally governed framework of quality assurance, coach training and continuous improvement. All NZRDA coaches hold recognised qualifications, undertake ongoing professional development, and deliver programmes in accordance with nationally recognised standards that are independently audited each year. This ensures every rider receives safe, evidence-informed therapeutic horse riding delivered by skilled professionals, well-trained volunteers and carefully selected horses.
