These are the words Dom’s specialist teacher, Kelly, uses to describe Riding for the Disabled – and the impact it’s had on him.
Dom attends RDA each week as part of his school programme. But what he’s gaining goes far beyond time in the saddle.
“The most powerful thing is how he talks more,” Kelly shares. “He has more connectiveness. He shares his thoughts more. He talks about riding.”
Across Aotearoa, more than 3,000 riders like Dom take part in RDA programmes each year, supported by trained coaches, dedicated volunteers, and specially selected horses. Each session is tailored to the individual – focusing on strengths, building ability, and working towards meaningful personal goals.
For Dom, those goals centre on communication, confidence, and engagement – key parts of his Individual Education Plan. And the change is clear.
“I’ve watched him become more confident, braver, and more engaged each week,” Kelly says.
At RDA, it’s never just about riding. Through carefully structured activities, riders develop skills that carry into everyday life – at school, at home, and in the community. From communication and coordination to independence and self-belief, these are life-changing outcomes.

“He learns responsibility and leadership… he learns self-management… and he has more self-belief,” Kelly explains.
Just as importantly, riders build connection – forming strong bonds with their horses, their coaches, and the people around them.
For Dom, that connection brings a real sense of joy.
“The whole thing is wonderful because he has a sense of excitement and joy,” Kelly says.
And when asked what he enjoys most, Dom’s answer says it all:
“The riding up the lane and over the hill is best. I like to throw the frisbees and do racing.”
Because of your support, RDA is able to deliver safe, high-quality, life-changing programmes in communities across New Zealand – helping riders like Dom grow in confidence, build meaningful connections, and discover just how capable they really are.
