Finding Focus Through Every Ride.
Riding Helps Christopher to focus on Minecraft. It’s Not Just pony rides in paddocks
Therapeutic horse riding helps Christopher strengthen the attention, memory and planning skills needed for everyday life. The focus he develops in the saddle helps him at school and when enjoying activities like Minecraft.
Christopher has always approached life with curiosity and determination. Born prematurely alongside his twin brother Thomas, he faced challenges from the very beginning. Yet those early obstacles have never defined him. Today, Christopher is an adventurous young boy who attends mainstream school, enjoys spending time with his friends and is always eager to take on new challenges.
At New Zealand Riding for the Disabled (NZRDA), Christopher takes part in the Sport and Recreation programme, where every riding session is carefully designed to develop the physical, cognitive and emotional skills that help him become more independent. While it might look like he’s simply learning to ride a horse, every activity has a clear therapeutic purpose that supports his development both in and out of the saddle.
One of Christopher’s biggest goals is becoming an independent rider.
Learning to trot without a leader requires far more than simply staying on his horse. Christopher must coordinate both sides of his body, maintain his balance, think about his posture, judge where his body is in space and communicate clearly with his horse, all while controlling the horse’s speed and direction. Every stride challenges his balance, core strength and coordination, helping him develop the confidence to take on increasingly complex riding tasks.
A key part of Christopher’s programme is the movement of the horse itself. As the horse walks and trots, its rhythmic, repetitive, three-dimensional movement (rotational, lateral and anterior-posterior) closely mirrors the movement of the human pelvis during walking. Every stride encourages Christopher to engage his core muscles, adjust his posture and continually respond to the changing movement beneath him. This unique movement strengthens his balance, coordination and body awareness while providing rich sensory input that supports motor development.
Riding also gives Christopher a unique perspective of the world. Sitting high on horseback continually challenges his vestibular system, helping improve his balance, coordination and spatial awareness while building the confidence to move more independently.
As Christopher progresses, his coach carefully introduces new challenges. Riding dressage patterns, navigating different routes around the arena and learning transitions all require him to follow multi-step instructions, remember sequences and think several steps ahead. These activities strengthen the concentration, planning and problem-solving skills that support his learning both at school and in everyday life.
To Christopher, these activities simply feel like exciting riding challenges.
To his coach, they’re carefully planned therapeutic interventions designed to build the thinking skills behind everyday learning.
One of Christopher’s proudest milestones has been learning to trot independently without a leader. Mastering this skill requires rhythm, balance, timing and confidence all working together. Every successful ride reinforces his belief that he can tackle difficult tasks, persevere through challenges and achieve things that once felt out of reach.
The progress Christopher is making doesn’t stop at the arena gate.
The improved concentration, planning and confidence he develops through riding are helping him engage more successfully in the classroom and approach new learning with greater confidence. When Christopher masters a new challenge, the smile on his face says it all. He can’t wait to tell his classmates about what he achieved at riding that week, and every success becomes another reason to believe in himself.
Although Christopher and Thomas follow very different therapeutic programmes, sharing their NZRDA journey has become something special for their whole family. Each brother celebrates the other’s achievements, encouraging one another while working towards their own individual goals. Together, they’re discovering that success doesn’t look the same for everyone – and that’s exactly as it should be.
Christopher’s greatest achievements aren’t measured by how well he rides.
They’re measured by the confidence he carries into school, the concentration he brings to learning, the pride he feels after mastering something new and the growing belief that he can achieve more than he ever imagined.
Because at NZRDA, therapeutic horse riding isn’t just about learning to ride.
It’s about giving children like Christopher the confidence and skills to take on every challenge – whether that’s in the classroom, on the playground or wherever life takes them.
Christopher’s progress is built on hundreds of carefully planned therapeutic activities designed to strengthen his concentration, confidence and independence. Every session is tailored to his individual goals and delivered by a skilled team committed to helping him succeed both in and beyond the arena.
Behind every NZRDA programme is a nationally governed framework of quality assurance, coach training and continuous improvement. All NZRDA coaches hold recognised qualifications, undertake ongoing professional development, and deliver programmes in accordance with nationally recognised standards that are independently audited each year. This ensures every rider receives safe, evidence-informed therapeutic horse riding delivered by skilled professionals, well-trained volunteers and carefully selected horses.
